Tobago
Overview
Tobago sits at the southern end of the Caribbean chain, where nutrient-rich currents from the Orinoco River and the Atlantic converge. This upwelling of cold, nutrient-dense water feeds some of the most biodiverse reefs in the Caribbean — and attracts the pelagic species that make Tobago famous.
Speyside, on Tobago's northeast coast, is the mecca for manta ray encounters. Atlantic manta rays visit cleaning stations on the reef year-round, with peak activity from December to May. The site "Manta City" is one of the world's most reliable manta ray dives.
Tobago also hosts the largest brain coral in the world — a massive Colpophyllia natans at Kelleston Drain measuring over 3 metres in diameter and estimated to be over 2,000 years old. The island's reefs are protected by the Buccoo Reef Marine Park, and the diving remains relatively uncrowded compared to more developed Caribbean destinations.

Tobago's most famous dive site. Atlantic manta rays visit this cleaning station year-round, with multiple rays often present simultaneously. An extraordinary, reliable encounter.
Kelleston Drain
Home to the world's largest brain coral — a 3-metre Colpophyllia natans estimated at over 2,000 years old. The surrounding reef is equally impressive with exceptional fish density.
Flying Reef
A current-swept reef off Speyside with excellent fish life and regular manta ray sightings. The current brings nutrients that feed enormous schools of fish.
Bookends
Two large coral pinnacles rising from the sand. Strong currents bring whale sharks and large pelagics, making this one of Tobago's most exciting advanced dives.
Buccoo Reef
The protected reef at Buccoo on Tobago's southwest coast. Shallow, calm, and colourful — ideal for beginners and snorkelers, though some areas show coral damage from historical boat anchoring.
Cathedral
A dramatic pinnacle formation with arches and swim-throughs. Nurse sharks rest in the caverns, and the surrounding water often holds eagle rays and barracuda.

Tobago's currents can be extremely powerful, particularly at Speyside sites. Only intermediate and advanced divers should attempt current dives without prior experience. Always dive with a local guide who knows the tidal patterns. Surface marker buoys are essential.
