Overview

Puerto Rico offers extraordinary diving variety for a single island. From the remote walls of Mona Island — often called the "Galápagos of the Caribbean" — to the bioluminescent bays of Vieques and the wall diving of La Parguera, Puerto Rico rewards divers willing to explore beyond the main tourist areas.

Mona Island, a nature reserve 70 kilometres west of the mainland, is Puerto Rico's premier dive destination. Accessible only by boat, it offers pristine walls, caves, and reefs with exceptional visibility and large marine life including manatees, hawksbill turtles, and sharks. Day trips and overnight camping are available with permits.

La Parguera on the south coast is the most developed dive area, with a wall system beginning at 15 metres and dropping to over 100 metres. The area also features the famous Phosphorescent Bay — one of the world's brightest bioluminescent bays — where millions of dinoflagellates light up the water at night.
