Overview
The Dominican Republic is best known for its beaches and resorts, but its underwater world is a hidden gem. The country offers diverse diving from the whale-watching waters of Samaná Bay to the reef systems of La Romana and the cavern dives of the north coast.
Samaná Bay is one of the world's great whale watching destinations. From January to March, thousands of North Atlantic humpback whales gather here to breed and calve. In-water encounters with these 40-tonne giants are offered by a handful of licensed operators — one of the most extraordinary wildlife experiences on Earth.
La Romana on the south coast offers the most developed dive infrastructure, with access to the Catalina Island reef system and several accessible wrecks. The north coast around Sosúa has good reef diving and a thriving dive school scene, making it popular with beginners.
