Cozumel is one of the most celebrated dive destinations on the planet. Located off the eastern coast of Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula, the island sits within the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System — the second-largest coral reef system in the world. Jacques Cousteau introduced Cozumel to the world in 1961, and it has never looked back.
The Cozumel Reefs National Marine Park protects the western and southern shores of the island, encompassing some of the most biodiverse coral ecosystems in the Caribbean. Crystal-clear water with visibility regularly exceeding 30 metres, combined with gentle to moderate drift currents, makes Cozumel ideal for effortless drift diving along spectacular wall and reef formations.
The island's unique geography — a flat limestone platform surrounded by deep open ocean — channels nutrient-rich currents along its reefs, supporting extraordinary marine biodiversity. Over 500 species of fish, 26 species of coral, and countless invertebrates call these reefs home. Cozumel is equally rewarding for beginners drifting shallow gardens and advanced divers exploring deep walls and caverns.
The crown jewel of Cozumel diving. Palancar stretches for several kilometres along the southwestern coast and is divided into distinct sections — Palancar Gardens, Palancar Caves, Palancar Bricks, and Palancar Horseshoe. Massive coral buttresses, swim-throughs, and towering sponges define this world-class site. Jacques Cousteau famously called it one of the most beautiful reefs in the world.
One of the most dramatic walls in the Caribbean. Santa Rosa drops vertically from 10 metres to beyond recreational limits, festooned with enormous sea fans, black coral trees, and barrel sponges. Strong currents sweep divers along the wall in exhilarating drift dives, with pelagic encounters common in the blue water off the wall.
A deep, current-swept site for experienced divers. Columbia's shallow section features a labyrinth of coral columns and swim-throughs, while the deep wall plunges into the abyss. Nurse sharks rest in sandy channels, and large grouper patrol the coral heads. The deep section regularly produces sightings of eagle rays and the occasional bull shark.
The most thrilling dive in Cozumel. Devil's Throat is a cavern entrance at 25 metres that descends through a series of chambers to 40 metres, exiting onto the open wall. The cavern is festooned with black coral and sponges, and the exit onto the sheer wall is breathtaking. Strictly for experienced divers with good buoyancy control.
A perfect introduction to Cozumel diving. Chankanaab's shallow reef is teeming with colourful reef fish, resting nurse sharks, and resident green sea turtles. The calm, clear water and gentle current make it ideal for beginners and underwater photographers. A sunken WWII-era plane wreck adds an extra point of interest.
A shallow, current-swept reef studded with over 60 coral heads, each hosting its own community of fish and invertebrates. Tormentos is a macro photographer's paradise — flamingo tongue snails, arrow crabs, and cleaning stations are everywhere. The gentle drift makes it an easy, enjoyable dive for all levels.
Dive Safety Reminder
Cozumel's currents can be powerful and unpredictable — always dive with a local guide who knows the site conditions. Devil's Throat and Columbia Deep are strictly for advanced divers with excellent buoyancy. The marine park prohibits touching coral, collecting anything, or feeding fish. Always carry a surface marker buoy (SMB) for drift dives.
